So bought on when we were sitting back, fair enough.

Depends how you look at it.

So he's fit to play, I think we will beat them

He's looked terrible because we ended up having to defend more when he came on!

Because he cant close anyone down, doesn't run much and is really slow. Apart from that he's perfect!

Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
When has he looked terrible?

When we had our backs against the wall and defending?

Serious question, I haven't noticed him looking terrible because we've mostly been defending when he's been on and by your own admission when we weren't he scored

So maybe in a game where we aren't playing on the break and have a lot of ball is when he will be of use.

Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
Can anyone explain to me why whenever Haller has come on in the last 10 minutes of a game with the current system we play he has looked terrible apart from the 1 goal against a dead Wolves team?

The only effective way to play Haller in this 100mph Premier League is to play him in a front two where BOTH players do not defend. Therefore he always has someone close to him to help out.

Thats an effective use of Haller.
I cant see anything else.

How can your lead striker always be way behind your wingers in an attack? How can your lead striker be slower than every other forward player on your team whilst in this league. Show me a team in this league that that works for?

I dont see one.

Good news if true, but somehow I doubt it. You can be sure that Moyes won't be giving anything away in his presser.

DHH - who the fuck are the athletic?

Great news if he's fit though. Can't be scared to risk him if he is.

Are you aware that Haller had a better goal contributions (goals and assists) per minute than Lewandowski in his last season in Germany?

Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
The athletic are reporting Antonio should be fit for Liverpool

Personally I don’t want to risk him after he’s come off with niggles twice

Rather not play him vs Liverpool and prevent a long term injury

Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
Darby - totally agree. Haller would be coming into a team which is almost unrecognisable from the one in which he was last playing regularly. It wouldn't involve any major changes for Haller to play - just a bit of tinkering.

Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
To people who say that we shouldn't change the way we play to suit him, we already have changed our entire system to suit weak links like Cresswell and Arthur, and they've been thriving under a system that suits them.

For example, I'd be happy to go back to 4-2-3-1, because while I think that Creswell and Arthur might still be a problem, I think they'd be far less a problem now than an isolated Haller.

While I think that 5-4-1 has been good for us, and especially for Arthur and Creswell, I don't think it's the main reason we've been getting results. The main reason we've been getting results is that the squad has more determination, grit and organisation than the half-hearted, directionless stuff we saw at the end of Pellers reign.

Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
What I dont understand is when people say "what choice do we have?"
A striker is a specialised position but it isn't just about being able to finish is it?

If it was teams wouldn't play without a recognised no.9 and they do all the bloody time!
Are Salah/Mane or Fiminho no.9's? no
Did Pep say, Foden, Sterling, you're not no.9's what am I going to do now Aguero is injured?

The most prolific goal scorers in European football history are not no.9's (Messi/Ronaldo).

In modern football you either need pace, play a long ball in or have hold up play that can bring the no.9 in to play and we dont have any of that for Haller. It feels like people are making the exact same arguments they made for Hernandez!

We could see he was shit for us and we persisted because of his reputation. People kept saying we had to change the team to fit Hernandez's style. But we dont have the squad or money to do that.

For me its a simple game. If a player has an eye for goal (i.e. Antonio was a winger and sometime fightback) put him up there. All our midfielders should be finishers that can occupy that no.9 position when needed.

I dont even think Haller was the no.9 at Frankfurt anyway. Wasn't it Jovic??
It's like we think Haller is Jovic when he's really has never played as an out an out striker before.

More to the point he offers nothing defensively! Which is the other reason I just cant see it. We are not good enough to have a player that cant close down the opposition at the top end of the pitch.

We have seen that Haller can finish. He has the tools to do more but it is getting to the point that he absolutely must show it soon.

Hermit Road 6:36 Wed Oct 28
Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
OK, maybe I exaggerated a bit.

He was mediocre to mildly above mediocre.

His purple patch of 15 goals still doesn't justify the colossal amount we spent on him.

He is the result of a transfer policy that isn't fit for purpose.

Pagey 6:30 Wed Oct 28
Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
Haller was way better than below par to mediocre for Frankfurt. That’s a ridiculous claim.

Hermit Road 6:26 Wed Oct 28
Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
Russ

He had two seasons in the Bundesliga. He scored 9 goals in one and 15 in the other. I reckon 9 is blow par and maybe 15 just above mediocre.

He didn't pull up any trees and he definitely didn't pull them up over any period of time long enough to justify the amount we spent on him.

Manuel 5:48 Wed Oct 28
Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
Not much of a change no, but would most likely go more through the middle with Haller rather than down the sides or over the top with Antonio. Besides, systems are over rated, generally the best side on the day wins, regardless.

Stubbo 5:43 Wed Oct 28
Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
I don't think we need to change our system, but we definitely would need to play our build up and the types of ways we utilise the possession we get.

Haller can drop deep and link, or stay high and flick on, so the onus is going to need to be on Bowen and Fornals either side to make the runs off of him given they are the most mobile - basically they will need to pull in field more, and not stay as wide.

Haller is very good at winning the first aerial ball.

Also the front three will need to press more as a unit and less so individually with Haller blocking the channel between the man with the ball and the out ball, and the wide player pressing the man on the ball more (imo)

Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
Agreed , and he isn't going to get a better chance against a Mickey's side with no Van Dyke.

Manuel 5:31 Wed Oct 28
Re: Antonio Vs Liverpool at Anfield - Should he play?
Debs - It's a tricky one as it would likely mean a change of system in some way. As I said he still has some credit in the bank and I am not saying it's definitely game over for him, but it's a long way back for him imo.

But to answer your question, yes I would. We still need to cling onto the hope that he can turn it around, and the only one he can do that is by being given a chance from the start.
